Senate to screen Tinubu’s new service chiefs on Wednesday

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has announced that it will hold the screening and confirmation of the newly appointed service chiefs on Wednesday, following a letter from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally forwarding their nominations.

The letter, read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at plenary, requests that the nominees be screened by the entire chamber, citing the provisions of the Armed Forces Act.

The nominees include Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Waheedi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, and Emmanuel Undiendeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence. President Tinubu’s communication directs the upper chamber to consider the nominations “expeditiously” given the prevailing security challenges.

The screening is part of the constitutional procedure before the new service chiefs can be sworn in and promoted. Observers note that the exercise will probe the nominees’ credentials and readiness to lead Nigeria’s armed forces amid rising national security threats.
