In a brazen attack on Monday morning, suspected armed robbers trailed a bank depositor from a withdrawal point and dispossessed him of a substantial cash sum along Secretariat Road, Agodi, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to the state police command’s statement, the victim was driving a metallic-grey Nissan Primera (plate number EPE 901 PS) when the robbers struck at about 8:00 a.m.
Security operatives on patrol responded promptly, leading to a gun-duel between the police and the fleeing robbers. During the exchange, one officer with the Oyo State Police Command sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a secure medical facility for treatment. No deaths have been reported so far.
The police spokesperson, CSP Adewale Osifeso, has launched a full-scale investigation and appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
According to the statement, the command is using the vehicle registration and other leads to track down the suspects.
Residents in the area expressed shock at the daylight boldness of the attack, noting how the robbers fired sporadically into the air to intimidate the driver and any intervening passersby.
They urged increased security presence along banking corridors and major routes in Ibadan.
